Adrien sleepwalks through his life. He used to be an almost virtuosic cello player and now lives with his mother, Irina, and his brother, Franklin. They live next to the Holy Land USA in Waterbury, CT. Irina and Franklin are Pentecostal, while Adrien is agnostic. Irina used to be a successful actress, but people stopped casting her.

Suddenly, Richard, who in a week will start a new position at an acclaimed theatre, appears on their doorstep. Adrien and Richard have a sordid past, but Irina insists that Richard stay. Simultaneously, Adrien gets visions from some unknown force that tell him to kill his brother.
